News from Suze - December 2024

20 December 2024

The Christmas season is now well and truly upon us and those long lazy days of summer we look forward to each year are just around the corner.

2024 has been a busy and brilliant year! I just want to take a moment to thank you all for your support. It’s been great to touch base with many of you throughout the year, whether at the office, local events, field days, prize givings, or over a coffee somewhere – I’ve loved hearing your stories, celebrating your successes, and working hard on the issues that matter most to you.

As we head into 2024, I’m feeling optimistic about the future for the Rangitīkei and New Zealand. There’s plenty of work to do, but together, we can make great things happen. December has delivered good news for the Rangitikei - with the Government’s decision not to proceed with tolling the Manawatu – Tararua Highway; and also the sale of the Whakapapa Ski Field to Whakapapa Holdings Limited (pending the granting of a DoC concession).

Christmas is a special time of year. It’s a chance to slow down, spend time with family and friends and soak up the Kiwi summer. This year I’ll be spending Christmas in Queen Charlotte Sound – it’ll be great to have the whole family together again to celebrate, now Sam is back from his OE.

Of course, no Kiwi Christmas would be complete without good food. For our family, summer = barbeques and one of our favourite meals is a butterflied leg of Coastal Lamb with new potatoes and a salad.  Simple and superb - take the lamb out of the fridge half an hour before cooking.  Next rub it with a bit of oil to stop it sticking and season with salt and pepper.  Then it’s just 15 minutes fat side down on the grill bit of the BBQ and another 15 minutes skin side down on the hot plate.  Remove from heat, cover loosely in foil and rest for 15 minutes. Carve it length-ways (across the grain).  Delicious every time!

Enjoy the festive season, make memories with loved ones and recharge your batteries for the new year ahead. Please stay safe these holidays, whether it’s on the roads, in the water, or under the sun.

If you’re travelling in the North Island, please be aware of the planned upcoming closure of the Desert Road (SH1), from 13 January for approximately two months.

From our family to yours, I wish you a joyful Christmas and a fantastic start to 2025.

Take care and here’s to plenty of laughs, delicious food and a good dose of sunshine – with enough rain to keep us farmers happy.
