Taupō MP Louise Upston is encouraging communities across the Taupō electorate to come together in reflection and remembrance this ANZAC Day.
“ANZAC Day is a time for all New Zealanders to pause and acknowledge and reflect on the sacrifices made by those who have served our country. It is our opportunity to honour those who have served and are currently serving, some of whom gave their lives for our country.
“New Zealand has a proud tradition of serving other countries in war and peace.
This year, we are acknowledging 110 years since the landing at Gallipoli by our ANZAC troops which fostered a strong sense of nationhood in both New Zealand and Australia. The first ANZAC Day was observed a year later in 1916.
“I am also proud of the Government’s recent announcement to introduce legislation to recognise more former soldiers, sailors and aviators as veterans while also establishing a national day dedicated to honouring New Zealand’s veterans, which will be marked annually with Veterans’ Service Awards.
“This marks meaningful progress toward a future where those who have served feel recognised and valued by the nation they served to protect.
“I will be honoured to commemorate ANZAC Day this year in Taupō for the dawn service and Tokoroa for the civil service where I’ll be joined by my 2025 Youth MP, Ryder Miller.
“Lest we forget.”
