Norsewood's New Cell Tower: A Long-Awaited Victory for Connectivity

“Norsewood's new cell tower isn't just a win; it's a game-changer for our community, offering greater connectivity and a better quality of life for everyone” says Mike Butterick, MP for Wairarapa, including the Taruarua District, “I want to give a big shout out to all those in the community that have advocated and fought hard to get this result”.

Beyond the immediate improvements in communication, the new cell tower stands to bring significant social benefits and economic opportunities to Norsewood.

Improved connectivity supports economic growth with local businesses able to stay better connected to their customers and enable remote work opportunities for those that need a reliable service.

This enhanced connectivity also allows for greater social interaction and inclusion, reducing the isolation often felt in rural areas. Access to Telehealth will make it easier for residents to receive timely medical advice and support. For students it offers hassle-free access to educational resources.

“However, we must acknowledge there’s still work to be done to make sure the entire Tararua District is connected”, Butterick adds “Areas such as Pongaroa and Route 52 still face connectivity challenges, but rest assured, these regions are not forgotten. With the same drive and teamwork that brought Norsewood its tower, we'll keep pushing forward”.

As Hamish Blyth from Connect Tararua aptly noted, "The next 18 months will be critical in addressing these underserved areas.", adding “Reliable networks are more than just a convenience or nice to have—they are a lifeline, especially in our rural communities where emergency services rely on strong connectivity to do their jobs”.

A proactive approach is required to get the best results no matter where you live. With the continued commitment of local organisations such as Crown Infrastructure Partners and the Rural Connectivity Group, expanding these essential services to all areas of Tararua looks positive.
