Back to school 2025 kicks off with teaching the basics brilliantly
As the 2025 school year kicks off, we’re starting an exciting new chapter for education in New Zealand - right here in the Wairarapa Electorate.
“From this year, parents can expect their children to benefit from a new year-by-year knowledge-rich curriculum grounded in the science of learning, structured approaches to literacy and numeracy, new classroom resources, targeted interventions for kids who need extra help, teachers' professional learning and development, and the roll-out of the new phonics check,” National MP Mike Butterick for Wairarapa says.
“We are focusing on teaching the basics brilliantly, so our children grow up confident and capable in literacy and numeracy. Whether they dream of becoming a farmer, electrician, doctor, engineer, or want to pursue other passions – a strong foundation in essential skills is vital,” Mr Butterick says.
“I’m proud to see our Government investing over $30 million in curriculum-aligned maths resources that will directly benefit over 433,000 students across the country.
“From maths workbooks and tactile learning tools to online support, these resources will help students thrive and give parents greater visibility of their child’s progress.
“I am really pleased to have visited some schools locally, to chat with the students, and to check out their new maths books. We’re also ensuring teachers get the support, they need to help teach the new curriculum confidently. “As this rolls out, other 2025 plans include updating all curricula to Year 13, revitalising NCEA, and addressing property equity to support schools nationwide.
“This Government is putting the foundations in place so their child can strive to do their best at school. We are committed to lifting achievement and closing the equity gap in our education system, so all Kiwi kids have the best opportunities to thrive.
