Hamish Campbell - December Update

12 December 2024

Hamish Campbell

One of the best things about being an MP is engaging and working with people all over the electorate. I appreciate being invited to attend events to learn the challenges and celebrate the successes of our residents, our different ethnic groups and geographical areas, along with not-for-profits, businesses and core public facilities.
Our first year in government has seen significant progress toward the commitments we made to New Zealanders a year ago, here’s a short wrap up of the year click here.
Some of the highlights we’ve achieved:
Reducing the Cost of Living: We’ve delivered tax relief, introduced the FamilyBoost tax credit, and taken steps to control inflation, easing the financial burden on households.
Strengthening Law and Order: We’ve banned gang insignia, increased police resources, and strengthened laws to tackle organised crime, ensuring safer communities.
Improving Education: We’ve improved school attendance and achievement, provided students with better opportunities, supported teachers, and reduced bureaucracy in the sector.
On a local level in Ilam the government has funded required reconstruction for a number of schools including Christchurch Girls’ High School and Ilam School. Elmwood Normal School opened their Rimu Block in August, Yaldhurst School completed rebuild of school in September and Heaton School redevelopment is officially opening this Friday 13th.
On August 6 the long overdue Emergency Observation Unit for Christchurch Hospital was opened easing strain on ED by bridging the gap between emergency care and full hospital admission and there has been significant investment into National Roads such as SH1 Rolleston access improvements and SH75 Halswell Road improvements which will positively impact on us all.
There is much more to do and I’m looking forward to the new year and new challenges!
