November 2024
My first year in office has been a year of challenges and responsibilities, but with those challenges have been opportunities. Meeting and assisting hundreds of Ilam residents and working to represent them in Wellington is a prime focus for me as I very much believe to be the best local MP I need to understand people’s concerns, challenges and opportunities.
This month I have focussed on hearing from Ilam residents and getting feedback on issues affecting different groups, so to celebrate ‘one year on’ from the election, I invited Ilam residents of all ages in to the office to get their feedback on the progress of Government to date. Speed of change and health and the economy were people’s major concerns. Those views were reinforced by visitors to the National Party stand at the Home Show a week later.
Facilitating an Ilam ‘Youth Panel’ focused on those aged 20-30 and discussed jobs and the cost of living as their main issues. The following week I hosted a breakfast with leaders from the high schools in the Ilam electorate. It was interesting to hear the issues that affect their decisions. I was keen to hear their thoughts on vaping and mental health.
The information from these discussions, added to all the responses to my surveys, gives me a very clear picture of the concerns and opportunities residents are facing both locally and nationally. This obviously helps me as I represent Ilam’s residents in parliament and as we work through policy as a party.
We are still collating survey data so will include a summation in next month’s newsletter.
Christmas is not far away and this year in the Ilam office we are collecting Christmas gifts for children at Ronald McDonald House.
If you have suitable new items for a child, that you would like to donate, please drop them (unwrapped) under the tree at my office - Unit 5, Fendalton Village (cnr Ilam/Clyde Roads).
Collection is from 25 November -12 December.
