Hamish Campbell - June Update

15 June 2024

Hamish Campbell

For many of us King’s Birthday weekend bought a welcome opportunity to get in to the garden and prepare it for winter.
I am delighted to acknowledge our Ilam resident who received a King’s Honour. Jane Cartwright, who received a MNZM for governance in Health.
Remember if you wish to nominate someone for a Royal Honour, please contact my office or click on New Zealand Royal Honours nomination guidelines | Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC)  It’s important to acknowledge those people who work in our community to make lives better for others.
June is a month to acknowledge those who volunteer in our community with the week of 16-22 June being National Volunteer week.
Thank you to all of you who volunteer in some capacity in your community.
Attending a play at our wonderful Court Theatre.
With violin soloist Amalia Hall from the Symphony Orchestra
Proudly wearing pink on pink shirt day to raise awareness of bullying.

THE MONTH THAT WAS …. May

Christchurch is a city that has always had a lot of culture on offer. I was delighted to attend fantastic performances by both the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and Court Theatre in May. I also got along to the Court Theatre garage sale.
I enjoy a close working relationship with our local body representatives so when the Hartley Ave pedestrian overbridge was closed due to public safety concerns it was rewarding to get the outcome that Christchurch City Council and the Ministry of Education agreed to fund the necessary repairs. Estimated costs of $44,500 is to be split equally between the two entities to accelerate the repairs.
Fendalton City Councillor James Gough, and Fendalton Community Board member David Cartwright and I visited the Hartley Ave overbridge to discuss the upcoming repairs.
In May I attended and spoke at the Pacific Young Leadership and Transformation Trust. We had a good discussion around the Restoring Citizenship Removed by Citizenship (Western Samoa) Act 1982 Bill. I am always keen to attend meetings and discussions in the community when I can.

THE MONTH AHEAD…. June

Please remember there is NO Ilam/Wigram luncheon in June due to Matariki falling on the last Friday of the month.
In July there are two functions on Friday 26 July:
The Ilam/Wigram luncheon at 12 noon with Hon Louise Upston as the guest speaker.
The other function is for the Women in the Party – an evening drinks and networking function with Hon Louise Upston.
Further details for both functions will be sent soon.
June 28, we celebrate Matariki. Matariki is the Māori name for the Pleiades star cluster and before sunrise during winter, the cluster is visible as a faint sparkle of tiny dots when you look towards the northeast horizon. It rises during Pipiri (June/July) and marks the beginning of the Māori new year.
A time of:
  • Remembrance – Honouring those we have lost since the last rising of Matariki.
  • Celebrating the present – Gathering together to give thanks for what we have.
  • Looking to the future – Looking forward to the promise of a new year
Enjoy the winter and all it brings.
Kind regards,
